Cape mosque attacks should be loudly condemned in public spaces - SAIRR

Mosques in Cape Town have been under attack.

In a recent incident, a Masjidul Jaamia in Kalk Bay was splattered with blood and holy scriptures were damaged on Monday.

A bloody pig’s snout was left at the gate of Noorul Islam mosque, just two days earlier in Simon’s Town.

Mienke Steytler, Head of Media and Public Affairs at SA Institute of Race Relations says people who condemn these sort of actions should speak louder in public spaces and not only in their private settings.

If you are sitting at home and you hear something like that, condemn it amongst your friends, do a Facebook post, Tweet about it and say this will not be tolerated.

At the root of this acts lies a general sense of fear and instability in the world, says Steytler. She says self-preservation is now becoming a huge factor not only in South Africa but globally.

For some people it means lashing out at people and groups that are different from themsleves.
