Frank or foul? Lumka Oliphant gets flak for FB rant about minister

12 January 2017 12:08 PM

Govt spokesperson Lumka Oliphant wrote a no holds barred Facebook post defending Bathabile Dlamini who has been called a drunkard.

Fed up Social Development spokesperson Lumka Oliphant is under fire for a recent Facebook rant in which she defended her boss using strong language.

This after the latest media reports alleged that the ANC Women's League president and Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini was allegedly drunk at a party event.

Oliphant posted the rant maintaining that Dlamini was not drunk and in fact does not drink alcohol.

The government spokesperson used some rather harsh words in her post and many on social media believe she may have been out of line for her use of several expletives (some written in Xhosa).

702 and CapeTalk listeners responded with their views on the matter:

In this case, [Lumka Oliphant] dropped the ball.

Alfie, caller

It's totally wrong. She needs to be dismissed... There's no way that someone at her caliber should post things like that. She must be fired.. What she has done is totally out of order.

Wiseman, caller

She should go back and apologise, but I support her.

Joseph, caller

I respect Lumka and her fight, but... why do you defend a woman by insulting other women? It erodes everything that I respect.

Lebo, caller

Lumka Oliphant was contacted by Eusebius McKaiser but was not available for comment.
