Gauteng Education 'stressed and frustrated' over 35 000 kids still unplaced

35 000 school children in Gauteng have yet to be placed. Spokesperson for Basic Education MEC in Gauteng, Oupa Bodibe, says the situation is very stressful and frustrating.

Bodibe described it as terrifying that more parents are still walking in with children looking to be placed in schools.

The 35 000 the department are referring to are the children of parents who applied online. The online system has been helpful in helping identify who applied on time, and those who left the application to the last minute.

According to Bodibe, the process has been slowed down by schools that are refusing to accept pupils He says these schools want to maintain their old ways of doing things. He mentioned two schools in Pretoria that are being problematic.

The effect of it is that it keeps the school mostly white and when black learners start living closer to the school, they are not being accepted and they legitimately applied and should have been admitted.

The limited resources have to be shared. We cannot have a situation where one population group monopolises the best schools.

The department is currently in talks with these schools trying to persuade them to change their ways and accept some of the learners. Bodibe says he was surprised to see some of the schools take the legal route.

If these schools accept more learners, the department will provide them with more teachers and learning materials.
