5 red flags to spot a Netcare job scam

Healthcare group Netcare has alerted the public to an on-going job scam using the private hospital network's name.

The scam lures victims by placing fake job adverts and training opportunities which are advertised on social media platforms or via SMS and e-mail.

Group human resources director Peter Warrener says the scam is exploitation of those who know the least and need the most.

According to Warrener, several other health service group have also been targeted.

He identified several red flags which should raise suspicion:

Anyone who sees any of these indicators should be immediately on the alert. No legitimate company would be using these mechanisms to get to prospective employees.

Peter Warrener, Group human resources director
  • if the application asks for your banking details
  • if there is a cellular number supplied instead of a landline for contact purposes
  • there is often a variation of the legitimate company's name
  • any mention of a payment fee, often justified as an admin, accommodation or uniform fee
  • the fee payment is usually requested upfront, typically via cellphone transactions

Warrener advises that such scams are damaging to the group's reputation and brand.
