Ramaphosa and Dlamini-Zuma two clear front runners for ANC presidency - analyst

Political analyst, Ebrahim Fakir, says the two clear front runners for the African National Congress (ANC) presidency are Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

President Jacob Zuma has publicly backed his ex-wife Dlamini-Zuma to take over the reigns from him, saying 'Zuma taking over from another Zuma is a good thing'.

Meanwhile, Ramaphosa warned ANC members of giving support to leaders who steal public money. Ramaphosa was talking at the Walter Sisulu University during the party's birthday celebrations.

I'm not sure this is fundamentally a question of instability or division. Clearly, the party is divided but probably divided for other reasons. I think we read too much into the fact that there is competition for positions.

Ebrahim Fakir, political analyst

Fakir added that competition is appropriate and makes for a stronger democracy.

What is slightly concerning is that they are all denying that this is actually what's going on.

ANC National Chairwoman Baleka Mbete has also made herself available for the presidency, saying she has been approached by many structures of the ANC.
