DTI imposes 13.9% import tariff to safeguard local poultry industry

Xolelwa Mlumbi-Peter, Deputy Director General: International Trade and Economic Development (DTI) says the trade agreements that they've signed have measures in place allowing for appropriate actions to be taken if necessary.

Mlumbi-Peter is responding to an announcement by Rainbow Chicken that they will be retrenching 1 350 workers from the end of this month due to importers that are flooding the market with chicken.

She says the Minister has imposed as 13.9% import tariff as a provisional safeguard measure.

She says they have asked the poultry industry to submit the necessary information to the International Trade Administration Commission because they can only impose the protection based on the information made available.

The industry has indicated that it will be submitting additional information to substantiate why an increased duty should be imposed.
