Police can't be at every Limpopo school, says National Commissioner Phahlane

Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane says Saps have deployed more police officers to monitor schools in Limpopo.

He says that police are being "unfairly bashed" and blamed for alleged violent protests and the burning of government property.

We are following up on intelligence to be able to effect arrests.

Khomotso Phahlane, Acting National Police Commissioner

This comes after the burning of Vhari primary school in Tshitale, outside Vuwani, on Sunday night.

Phahlane says police will continue with patrolling and visible policing, but cannot be blamed for the current situation.

He says the education department is mandated to assign security services at schools under threat.

The securing of schools is the responsibility of the Department of Education. They hire and deploy.

Khomotso Phahlane, Acting National Police Commissioner

He explains that the alleged arson attack is related to protests in the area over the construction of roads.

Their problems relate to service delivery, amongst others the tarring of the roads... Why are those responsible for road infrastructure not getting closure to the leadership there to resolve the issues?

Khomotso Phahlane, Acting National Police Commissioner

Phahlane maintains that the grievances of residents are not related to police services.
