Nelly Monageng runs Monageng Market Pick n Pay, a third generation family business in Soweto that grew from just selling fresh meat to striking a franchising deal with retail giant Pick n Pay.
Her grandparents owned a butcher shop which began trading in Diepkloof, Johannesburg in 1972, and the store has now been converted into the first Pick n Pay in the area.
Over the years her father faced tough challenges such as the emergence of informal spaza shops and the opening of a small shopping square in the vicinity.
But the stiff competition served as an opportunity for them to rethink their business model, market research and pricing strategy, she explains.

The butchery was then expanded to become a supermarket offering a range of different goods, once the township malls and shopping centres began mushrooming.

With the help of the Awethu Project (an SMME investment company) business incubation, the Monageng family gained new entrepreneurial skills and fresh business strategies.
Then in February 2016 a revamped Monageng Market Pick n Pay was launched, conveniently offering both their local products and Pick n Pay's goods.
The store now employs eight people, aside from Monageng who manages day-to-day operations.
Monageng explains that the business has kept their brand and products in their store as a part of their agreement.
