Western Cape dam levels under scrutiny

The drought in South Africa is set to continue after the lowest rainfall year ever recorded‚ and scientific predictions show there is no guarantee there will be sufficient rain during the coming season.

Cape Town residents are on level three water restrictions and are encouraged to continue using water sparingly.

The Western Cape was not spared and when the issue of restrictions came in we needed to look at the Western Cape too.

Ratau says thunderstorms and bursts of rainfall are not sufficient to solve the problem.

What we actually need as a country, is consistent rainfall over a considerable period of time that would then be able to make sure that we do have sufficient water.

He says the weather services predict above average rainfall, but only towards the end of the year and beginning of 2017.
