While some households qualify for exemptions from the water restrictions, this should not result in negligence

The City's Mayco Member for water services Xanthea Limberg explains that officials handle exemption applications on a case by case basis, with stringent criteria to ensure that there is no abuse.

The City has received 2 000 exemption inquiries since the 31 October 2016 and have only approved 1 200 applications, Limberg advises.

She says that exemption requests typically entail the irrigation of water for longer periods, using a hosepipe or sprinkler instead of a bucket as per restrictions.

There are stringent criteria to ensure that we don't provide exemptions willy-nilly.
