Meet the famous Mark Mobius (aka ‘Pied Piper of emerging markets’)

The management that you have in South African companies are world-class.

Mark Mobius

The tax collection in South Africa is probably the most efficient in the world.

Mark Mobius

The political environment in South Africa results in people like us being careful.

Mark Mobius

It’s disappointing to see a country like this growing at 1%. South Africa should be growing at five, six or seven percent!

Mark Mobius

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Templeton Emerging Markets Group Executive Chairperson Mark Mobius for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Born a US citizen, Mobius was also entitled to German citizenship by descent.

He renounced his US citizenship and is now a German citizen.

Mobius has been a key figure in developing international policy for emerging markets.

He frequently appears on financial television shows on networks including Bloomberg, CNBC, MSNBC and CNN.

Mobius is sometimes referred to as the "Pied Piper of emerging markets".

A comic book on the life of Mobius (Mark Mobius — An Illustrated Biography of the Father of Emerging Markets Funds) was published in 2007.

It has, so far, been translated into English, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Thai and Japanese.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

I feel like I’m 18, not 80!

Mark Mobius

I think Donald Trump will be ‘net good’ for the global economy.

Mark Mobius

With a German passport I have more freedom to travel to places such as Cuba. It’s not easy to travel to many places if you’re an American citizen.

Mark Mobius

I’m a world citizen.

Mark Mobius

I started out in Japan when it was still an emerging market!

Mark Mobius

I was in China during the Cultural Revolution. I saw the incredible potential and I had a lot of experience of what was happening in Taiwan. I thought then that if Taiwan could do it so can China.

Mark Mobius

Last year things were going downhill fast [in South Africa]. Now things have stabilised.

Mark Mobius

There has to be a change in the parastatals. South Africa has to privatise them so they can become more responsible, transparent and efficient.

Mark Mobius

We’d like to put more into South Africa, but it depends on what’ll happen politically.

Mark Mobius

I came to Cape Town on the Blue Train. I definitely have to hit the beach in Clifton!
