Gauteng Education suspends teacher involved in sexual relationship with learner

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says the department has suspended a Johannesburg high school teacher allegedly involved in a transactional, sexual relationship with a grade eight pupil.

It is believed that the parent knew about the relationship and was receiving groceries from the teacher.

Lesufi says the department has removed the teacher from the school and intends to institute a disciplinary hearing.

If we act against the teacher now, the teacher obviously take action against the department because the evidence we have now is not strong. But it's a moral standing that the department needs to adhere to - has compelled us to suspend the teacher.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

For me it's a role of society, do we allow these things to happen under our watch?

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

Lesufi says the teacher has denied the allegations.
