Bakkie driver says woman wanted to ride at the back, slams racism accusations

The Eastern Cape driver responsible for giving a black woman a lift in the back of his bakkie has responded to social media accusations claiming that he is a racist.

Johan Erasmus says he saw nothing wrong with transporting the woman in a livestock cage in the rear end of his vehicle.

Erasmus claims that the woman was a stranger he gave a lift to, and that she voluntarily chose to sit in the back because she felt hot.

Sy gaan self agter in die bakkie geklim as sy se sy kry warm. (She climbed in the back of the bakkie on her own because she said she felt hot).

According to Erasmus, the woman wanted to go to the clinic in town but there there were books, luggage and equipment in the passengers seat of his two door Isuzu.

He says the story has got out of hand, and he has also now received several threats to burn down his vehicle and house.

Erasmus says he's dismayed at accusations of racism, adding that the people he works with can confirm whether he's racist or not.

He says he thought he was doing the right thing by giving her a ride says that the structure is not a cage, but rather enclosure for livestock such as sheep.

EWN and the programming team are attempting to establish contact with the woman.
