LISTEN: I paid for sound system from my own personal account - Phahlane

Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane says he paid for his R80,0000 sound system at his house in Pretoria.

Phahlane says he instructed his bank to process the payment from his current account after he received the quotation from the supplier.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating Phahlane for allegedly receiving money through corrupt means when he was head of forensic services.

It's alleged that a supplier of chemicals used in forensic work transferred money to a supplier who installed the sound system at Phahlane's house. And the supplier was then awarded with a tender.

I contracted that person in my personal capacity as an interior designer.

Phahlane says there is nothing wrong with using the same service provider used by his department.

Yes, there is nothing wrong. All of us will go to Makro, does it mean that if the police go to Makro I'm not supposed to go to Makro.

I did a transaction with her in her person capacity as interior designer not as a service provider.

Phahlane is also being investigated on a charge of defeating the ends of justice after he allegedly contacted a witness who formed part of the Ipid probe into his house.

Forensic investigator, Paul O'Sullivan, opened the case against Phahlane. He claims that Phahlane's bond is far lower than the R8 million house he owns in Pretoria.
