Actress Lorcia Cooper swaps dance moves for prison life

Actress, dancer and choreographer, Lorcia Cooper, says she is happy to be back on our TV screens to honour women who have gone through prison life.

Cooper stars in the new all-female prison drama series on Mzansi Magic, Lockdown.

She plays the role of Tyson, a tough boxing champion who wants to rule her fellow prisoners.

I feel like Lockdown is the first of its kind in our country. The stories are being told to honour people who have gone through that. It's to really be realistic about the take on prisoners and their stories.

Lorcia Cooper, actress, dancer and choreography

Cooper, who hails from Cape Town, has not been acting for the past three years.

I got to a point where I was like I don't know if this was for me. I keep getting cast on the same roles - pretty coloured girls, nice legs, straight her.

Lorcia Cooper, actress, dancer and choreography

I used to go to castings and people were like you don't look rough enough or your hair is too straight to be colored.

Lorcia Cooper, actress, dancer and choreography

Lockdown came and I was like this is something different, and when I got it I knew this was gonna be it.
