Home Affairs takes on Oppenheimer family over VIP airport terminal

Home affairs is taking legal action against South Africa’s richest family, the Oppenheimers, over the family's exclusive VIP “Fireblade” airport terminal at OR Tambo International Airport.

Mkuseli Apleni, Director-General at Department of Home Affairs, says the matter is now before the courts.

Apleni says Home Affairs cannot simply grant special services to this family, as their job as a government parastatal is to serve the public and not a particular family.

Their request is that they don't want to go through immigration where everybody goes through. They are saying can you give us a permission to have our own.

We don't have the power to give somebody an authority like that.

Apleni explains that in terms of the Act there is one port of entry for all citizens.

Once you land, you go to the immigration counters with everybody.
