‘Fake Twitter accounts being used to misinform public’

JOHANNESBURG - Questions are being asked about the agenda of a few fake news Twitter accounts, with three media organisations being mimicked.

False accounts have emerged of 702, the Sunday Times and the Huffington Post.

A number of false posts have emerged with inaccurate and misleading information.

This included stories about Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and others.

Media Monitoring Africa's William Bird says these accounts are clearly aimed at using the media to create a misinterpretation of South African politics.

“This is to try and persuade people that there’s another kind of reality, they’re aiming to shift political discourse.”

He says the accounts should not be called parodies as there is nothing satirical about them

“They’re using the accounts to justify what in reality is simply a clear attempt to misinform people.”

Bird says while it is unclear whether the same people created all these accounts all aim to discredit media heavyweights.
