Icasa wants proof SABC has removed violent visuals protest ban

EWN Parliamentary reporter, Gaye Davis reports from Parliament. The Parliamentary Communications Committee has been hearing from Icasa if the SABC complied with overturning the ban to stop broadcasting footage of the destruction of property during protests.

The decision was implemented by controversial former SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Icasa has told Parliament’s Communications Portfolio committee that it has laid criminal charges with the police over the public broadcaster’s failure to comply.

Icasa councillor Nomvuyiso Batyi says the authority was told two weeks ago that the matter’s now with the Hawks.

Batyi said there has been no proof to date that the SABC has complied with the ruling and overturned the may decision of last year to ban the protest visuals.

Penalties for defying Icasa include being fined up to R1 million or a year in jail for the accounting officer.
