Marinda Visser, a scientist at Grain SA's research and policy centre explains what this armyworm is and how it can destroy entire fields in a matter of weeks.
Visser says they have been receiving reports since the beginning of the year. There was a huge problem with the armyworm in Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
It has ultimately become a problem down here and we are working with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to go out and collect samples as soon as farmers respond.— Marinda Visser, Grain SA scientist
They are trying to implement preventative measures in the form of pest control management, but are waiting for results as to whether it is the African armyworm or the American Fall armyworm.
She says it can travel very long distances in the wind.
