Producers proud after Winnie doccie film scoops Sundance Film Fest award

The documentary film about Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has won an award for Best Director in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend.

The awards ceremony was held in Park City in Utah, US and was the world premiere of the film.

The documentary was co-produced by Paris-based production company Pumpernickel Films, Amsterdam-based Submarine, IV Films in Finland, and Cape Town-based production company Big World Cinema.

Big World Cinema's co-producer Steven Markovitz says the producers are proud of the accolade which gives major recognition to the director, Pascale Lamche and subject matter herself.

We're absolutely thrilled about it. The award is probably one of the most important documentary awards in the world.

Steven Markovitz, co-producer at Big World Cinema

The film took almost four years to produce and features several in-depth interviews with the struggle stalwart, Markovitz explains.

He recalls the process of collecting archival records to piece together the story of the misunderstood icon.

Markovitz advises that the film will reach South Africa for release in July this year.
