The Zuma today is not as strong as the one who fired Nene - political analyst

Media reports that Zuma has claimed National Treasury is frustrating the economic transformation agenda should be treated with caution, says political analyst Nic Borain.

Despite confirming that there is clearly an assault on Pravin Gordhan, Borain cautioned commentators not to fuel the fire.

He cautioned that Zuma's claims about Treasury should not be allowed to become dangerous rumours which can sweep through the markets, with damaging consequences.

Borain summed it up: "It is a fake news scam, but it is still very dangerous as it changes views and influences outcomes... (Brexit, the Trump victory)."

The Zuma today is not as strong as the one who fired Nene.

Nic Borain, political analyst

I think its less likely that Jacob Zuma and his faction would remove Pravin Gordhan than Jacob Zuma was to remove Nene in December 2015 ... He spent 2016 suffering one blow after the other.

Nic Borain, political analyst

Speaking on CapeTalk, Borain confirmed that the assault on Minister Gordhan is linked to ANN7, ANC Youth League, ANC Women's League and other front organisations such as Black First Land First, who are all "speaking from a script", which includes support for Zuma.

He says while he cannot read ZUma's mind, he believes it is unlikely that the President would fire the finance minister and allow the country to go into economic free-fall.
