Social grant officials this week rebelled against Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini due to her alleged interfering in their efforts to present a social grants payment plan to Parliament, reports News24.

A number of worried officials have approached amaBhungane with separate, corroborative accounts.

There were several accounts of Dlamini trying to pressure SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) with a hastily devised plan to boost the role of private contractors - particularly that of the contentious incumbent Cash Paymaster Services (CPS).

Officials claimed Dlamini’s plans contradicted the “open architecture” alternative that Sassa, Treasury, the Department of Social Development and the SA Reserve Bank devised.

CapeTalk's John Maytham interviewed AmaBhungane’s investigative journalist Craig McKune.

Sassa presented a plan to Parliament… The plan flies on a wing and a prayer.

The choice is the country burns, or we have to beg the ConCourt to extend the contract.
