Joost was one of the best ruby players SA will ever produce - Naas Botha

Rugby commentator and former Springbok flyhalf Naas Botha has paid tribute to Joost van der Westhuizen, who lost his six-year-long battle to motor neuron disease.

Botha says that van der Westhuizen shined the spotlight on a debilitating condition which needs more awareness.

I think a l lot of people will definitely understand the sickness a lot better now.

Naas Botha, Legendary former Springbok flyhalf

We knew it was going to happen, but it is still a sad day. We were very fortunate.

He says van der Westhuizen was a phenomenal rugby player for both the Blue Bulls and Springbok.

According to Botha, van der Westhuizen's biggest achievement was winning South Africa its first Rugby World Cup Final in 1995 - and remaining on top form for over a decade after that.

In every single game he played, there was always something to talk about in terms of what Joost did to change the game.
