6 ways to avoid being stung when confronted by a swarm of bees

A Cape Town man is in a critical condition after being stung by bees in Kuils River.

Netcare911 says he may have been stung up to 100 times on Monday.

The man was apparently cutting down tree branches when he was attacked by a swarm of bees.

Several paramedics were also stung.

Over the weekend, the ODI cricket match was temporarily suspended at the Wanderers stadium after a swarm of bees came onto the field.

Bee keeper Robert Post shares advice on how to react when people encounter a swarm of bees.

  • be very aware of your surroundings
  • do not try swat the bees
  • do not wave your arms about or run around
  • gently put your neck in your shoulders and arms by your side
  • walk away from the environment
  • water also helps disperse bees and makes it difficult for them to fly - spray water only if under serious threat

Bees do not just attack people, it's only when their nest is compromised that they will start defending themselves.
