Lebo Mashile's moving poem dedicated to Khwezi and stirring Sona speech ideas

What are the words President Jacob Zuma should say in his State of the Nation Address?

Presenter Eusebius Mckaiser asked listeners to share some of the literary extracts which they would love Zuma to include in his speech.

Renowned actor, writer and performance poet Lebo Mashile shares a poem she penned (at 10:30 in the audio below).

The poem is dedicated to Zuma's deceased rape accuser Fezekile Kuzwayo - known to the public as Khwezi - and gender activist Kwezilomso Mbandazayo (who shared her name with Kuzwayo during and after the trial).

Comedian, actor and writer Joey Rasdien quotes the wisdom of ancient Chinese writer and philosopher Lao Tzu, who wrote the classic text Tao Te Ching.

He makes reference to two principles from the Tao Te Ching, for Zuma to reflect on, one of which is quoted below:

If listeners were speech writers for Zuma, which quotes would work or not work for his Sona address?

Political economy expert Wits prof Patrick Bond and various callers share their own quote suggestions for Zuma:

  • An extract from Frantz Fanon's book The Wretched of the Earth
  • An extract from William Shakespeare's Richard III
  • "Remember Khwezi"
  • An extract from W.B Yeats' poem Second Coming
  • An extract from William Shakespeare's Hamlet

Take a listen to Mashile's poem and other literary references:
