City of Cape Town to be 'frugal' with future Sona arrangements

The City of Cape Town plans to reduce the amount of resources it extends to the State of the Nation Address (Sona), says safety chief JP Smith.

Smith says he spoke with Mayor Patricia de Lille and other municipalities about reducing resources dedicated to the annual event.

This is after Parliament doubled the number of road closures and deployed 441 SA National Defense Force troops.

According to Smith, the excessive metro police roll-outs and drills have affected traffic and commuting, while other communities continue to face real safety threats.

We are not blind to the excesses of government. The Parliament of the people is slowly changing.

JP Smith, MayCo Member for Safety and Security

The Sona arrangements year-on-year are becoming more cumbersome, disruptive and burdensome on the public.

He says the City will be frugal with future arrangements and will push for minimal road closures and police deployment.

You cannot justify to the public those kind of excess policing roll outs around Parliament for an event which should be inclusive.
