Youth unemployment and perceptions of crime still high - Stats SA boss

Statistician-General of South Africa Dr Pali Lehohla released the findings of the Victims of Crime Survey and Labour Force Survey.

Stats SA says the economy created 235,000 jobs, with a slight decline in the unemployment rate to 26.5% in the last three months of 2016.

However, Lehohla says the burden of unemployment still lies on young people who remain vulnerable to labour market.

He says long-term unemployment has increased, along with graduate unemployment (for those under 24) - particularly for black youth.

The young people are the future and the problem is long-term unemployment grew from 57% to 68%.

He says the data needs to be understood in detail, so that the appropriate intervention can be made.

Crime:

During the last five years South African households experienced a sharp decline in home robberies and housebreakings, from 931, 000 (6.8%) in 2010 to 807,000 (5.7%) in 2015/16.

Lehohla says theft of personal property also saw a steady decline, from 2.5% in 2011 to 2% in 2015/16.

Despite this, perceptions of crime are still high in South Africa.

Lehohla says perceptions of crime and public safety may have to change, as they lead to anti-social and unproductive behaviour.

The evidence on the ground is that we have a major challenge to tackle.
