MPs call for criminal charges against Qedani Mahlangu over 100 Esidimeni deaths

Health Ombudsman, Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, told Parliament's portfolio committee on health that the death toll of mentally ill patients who were transferred from Life Esidimeni to 27 NGOs has now risen to above 100.

About two weeks ago Makgioba confirmed that 94 mentally ill patients died after being transferred to unlicensed NGO's.

EWN reporter, Linsday Dentlinger, says Makgoba told MPs that since the investigations started more and more people are coming forward with incidents of family members dying at these facilities.

For now, it is not clear as to how many people have died as a result of the transfer but the number keeps rising.

Makgoba says the entire process has defeated the purpose of trying to de-institutionalise caring for mentally ill patients and that these NGO's were not set up to care for these kinds of patients.

He says NGO's managers admitted that they thought this was a business opportunity.

According to Dentlinger, MPs were outraged and deeply saddened by these incidents and some of them are calling for the former Health MEC for Gauteng Qedani Mahlangu to be criminally charged, saying it is not enough that the MEC resigned.
