Paul O’Sullivan's arrest is attempt to scupper case against Phahlane - Ipid

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head Robert McBride says the arrest of private investigator Paul O’Sullivan was an attempt to derail the investigation into acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane.

McBride and officials from the independent watchdog briefed the police’s portfolio committee following O’Sullivan's arrest and release on Monday.

The private investigator is the complainant in the corruption investigation into Phahlane, explains EWN's Barry Bateman.

Phahlane is alleged to have accepted illicit payments for securing tenders when he was the head of forensics at Saps in 2014, among other things.

McBride says the investigation into Phahlane is at an advanced stage.

He let the committee know that they have secured significant evidence to prove allegations of fraud, corruption and money-laundering against Lieutenant-General Phahlane.

McBride refuted allegations that O’Sullivan impersonated an Ipid officer.

He added that Phahlane was aware of the investigation into his conduct, despite claims from Lieutenant-General that he didn't know.

Ipid head Robert McBride says he believes the arrest of Paul O’Sullivan is linked to the corruption case against top cop Khomotso Phahlane.
