SACP takes swipe at Guptas

Speaking on The MiddayReport, Gert van der Merwe, lawyer acting for the Gupta family, said he read the SACP's report (published in the online edition of the African Communist Magazine) and "could not find one single incident of fact to which they refer".

The SACP has long called on President Jacob Zuma to distance himself from the Guptas, saying his administration has been marked by recklessness and interventions by the Gupta-captured network, which is conducting itself as a "shadowy parallel state".

Van der Merwe also commented on the Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas' affidavit, saying there was a typing error with regards to the date of the meeting. In the affidavit, Jonas sticks to his story that there was a meeting, where he was offered money and the Finance Minister position by AJ Gupta.

When it comes to allegations of state capture, this meeting will become imperative. At some point in time, these versions will have to be tested. I want to present the version of the Gupta family to the Public Protector who rushed to get the report out without their version.

Gert van der Merwe, lawyer representing the Guptas

When asked by Grootes why the meeting would be held at the Gupta's house if it didn't involve the Guptas, Van der Merwe replied that this is the question South African's are asking.

I've long supported a judicial commission of inquiry into this. As long as fact is disputed there must be a forum for that to be tested. Let's get council to cross examine those witnesses. It's important to find out who's right, who's wrong.
