Gupta meeting with Mcebisi Jonas is the 'smoking gun' of state capture claims

The Deputy Finance Minister maintains his version of events over his Treasury job offer, despite Ajay Gupta calling his bluff.

Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas maintains his version of events surrounding his Treasury job offer.

Jonas has said in court papers that he is sticking to his version that Ajay Gupta offered him the position of finance minister and R600 million.

Ajay Gupta claims that Jonas has been blatantly dishonest about the meeting, which the deputy minister has denied, explains senior EWN reporter Stephen Grootes.

These papers are essentially Mncebisi Jonas saying I am sticking to my version of the story.

Meanwhile, Gupta lawyer Gert van der Merwe told Grootes that the details of the meeting will give credence to allegations of state capture.

Although the court papers are being filed in relation to the banks closing the Gupta's family accounts, and not state capture directly, they made shed light into the events that led to the Finance Minister shuffle.

To the court of public opinion it's hugely important; it's the smoking gun. Mncebisi Jonas has put this on an affidavit.

Meanwhile the public awaits the judicial commission into state capture recommended by the Public Protector last year.
