According to Professor Nick Fink, chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics at Stellenbosch University, the army worm will not affect the maize harvest as most South African crops are genetically modified and resistant to these kinds of attacks.
Agriculture has enough bad news so it's nice to have some good news and that is the infestation is no more than just a threat. We need to monitor it, but we don't need to take it too seriously. And the predicted maize harvest is about 30% more than what it was last year.— Prof. Nick Fink, Chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics at Stellenbosch University
