You can replace Gordhan with a dog and it would do as good a job - senior journo

Financial journalist Duma Gqubule says even though he wants Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan fired, he doesn't think Brian Molefe is a suitable candidate for the job.

Eusebius McKaiser asked Gqubule and Financial Mail deputy editor Sikhonathi Mantshantsha if Brian Molefe has the skills to make a good finance minister.

This follows the announcement that the former Eskom CEO will be sworn in as Member of Parliament in the North West and speculation that he is heading for a position in Cabinet under the Finance Ministry.

I think that he is a Treasury man, through and through. In Treasury, there is a certain brainwashing that happens to everybody that works there. They suddenly become magically converted to a neoliberal right wing way of understanding the economy.

Duma Gqubule, financial journalist

Given Brian's background in Treasury, I don't think he is the right person to take finance minister position.

Duma Gqubule, financial journalist

The people who want Pravin Gordhan out, and I agree that he must go out because he has been a very bad finance minister for the country, I don't think they are wanting this change for the same reason I want this change.

Duma Gqubule, financial journalist

Mantshantsha says he agrees with Gqubule that National Treasury has failed South Africans, but says the Presidency should be blamed not Gordhan.

The person who should be accused and guilty of everything... is the head of State.

Sikhonathi Mantshantsha, Financial Mail deputy editor

National Treasury only works through certain mechanisms that have been agreed to by the ruling party, by the government.

Sikhonathi Mantshantsha, Financial Mail deputy editor

This government has had no vision for the past eight years. It's just living from day-to-day.

Sikhonathi Mantshantsha, Financial Mail deputy editor

You could replace Pravin Gordhan and put a dog there, it would still do what he has been doing. Until you have a vision, what is it is that you want to spend money on. Instead they spend money on things that are not sustainable.

Sikhonathi Mantshantsha, Financial Mail deputy editor
