Ex Eskom boss Brian Molefe is "competent" to be a member of Parliament - ANC

Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Midday Report, Dakota Legoete, ANC North West Provincial General Secretary, confirmed that the ANC saw no reason that former Eskom boss, Brian Molefe, should not be a Member of Parliament.

When asked by Grootes how it could be that Molefe was fit to be a member of parliament when Molefe himself believed it was inappropriate for him to be CEO of Eskom, Legoete replied that "for now... there's no judgment in any court saying Molefe is on the wrong side of the law".

Legoete declined to give his political opinion about the reported speculation surrounding Pravin Gordhan's position as Finance Minister, or the suitability of Molefe's proposed parliamentary duties given his controversial Eskom resignation.

He said he preferred to discuss political opinions internally.

In a constitutional democracy, the court is the last arbiter in any dispute. It will be wrong for us to make a judgement on Comrade Molefe without a ruling of a competent court... and the law is clear: you are innocent until proven otherwise.

Dakota Legoete, ANC North West Provincial General Secretary

Grootes asked if he thought the Gupta family, with whom Molefe had a close relationship, are looting or helping South Africa.

Legoete replied that this would be a question to put to the Presidency and that "the issue of Brian Molefe and the Gupta's is better put to Molefe".

For now there is nothing which says Comrade Molefe is in conflict with the law. ... It would be unfair for us to want to crucify him through the court of public opinion.
