Applicants who have applied for National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding for studies have until 28 February to challenge rejections.
Caller Ndumi phoned into The Afternoon Drive with Redi Tlhabi and related how her friend had been rejected for NSFAS funding.
He got an SMS on Friday night at 10pm...saying that his application is unsuccessful for the university of his choice but if he reapplies at a TVET college he might be reconsidered.

She said that sounded 'weird' and called NSFAS herself to find out more.
Today I called, and the lady said to me, 'you know what I'll just be honest with you, we don't have funds.'
— caller, Ndumi
She says just a few weeks ago the NSFAS spokesperson said that every student that is eligible and who has applied will get funding, and now they singing a different tune.
Lee called in about her sister who has 5 distinctions and says the family has scraped together to get her through her first years of study. Now NSFAS says she does not qualify.
We honestly don't have the money. But they are impossible to get hold of...and we don't understand why.
— caller, Lee
