National Assembly adopts minor changes on Fica Bill

Members of Parliament have unanimously agreed to pass the amended Financial Intelligence Centre Amendment (Fica) Bill on Tuesday in Parliament.

The Bill deals with laws designed to combat money laundering.

Lawson Naidoo, Council for the Advancement of SA Constitution, says it seems the MPs are trying to send a strong message to President Jacob Zuma.

President Zuma previously refused to sign the Bill into law, saying Section 45 allows for warrantless searches, but the Finance Committee says the issue of warrantless searches issue has been dealt with.

Naidoo says the MPs put a lot of time into trying to address some of the concerns that the President has raised.

We are very pleased that the matter has been dealt with very speedily. We really hope that now the President will sign the Bill very quickly.
