ANC and DA butt heads over calls for Makhura's resignation

There have been ongoing calls for Gauteng Premier David Makhura to step down for his handling of the Life Esidimeni tragedy.

Makhura maintains that his office wasn't consulted ahead of the transfer move which resulted in the deaths of least 100 mental health patients.

This is despite apparent evidence that his office was informed and warned beforehand.

Provincial legislature members debated a motion of no confidence in Premier David Makhura on Tuesday.

29 members voted in favour of Makhura’s removal, while 37 voted against the motion.

DA's Shadow Health MEC in Gauteng Jack Bloom says there were several points at which Makhura could have intervened prior to the patient transfer.

The Premier's indecisiveness shows that he is not fit to govern this province and has let us down.

Bloom says it was also irresponsible for Makhura not to fire Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu when she announced the initial deaths of 36 patients, when in fact 77 had already died.

Meanwhile, the ANC chief whip Brian Hlongwa says the DA's motion against Makhura is a political stunt.

Hlongwa says Makhura's knowledge of patient transfer is the subject of an investigation.

He claims there is no evidence or grounds on which to remove Makhura, who Hlongwa says has already taken responsibility.

There must be political accountability and the Premier has owned up to the fact that this has happened under his government's watch.

According to Hlongwa, Makhura has done enough to show his remorse.

He's expressed regret and has called for restorative justice, working closely with bereaved family to find a way forward and hold people accountable. For me that is sufficient.
