Gauteng Transport MEC describes plans to add 19 Gautrain stations

Gauteng MEC of Transport Ismail Vadi has announced big plans to expand the Gautrain service.

The MEC says there are plans to build 19 new Gautrain stations in the province.

He confirmed that there are plans to extend the rail route by 150 kilometers.

This comes after a feasibility study, which reports that the project will be a viable pursuit.

Vadi explained what the expanded network will include and entail and says new trains are needed due to peak-time demand.

Broad plans are to look at extending the network from Mamelodi all the way to Jabulani in Soweto. And then also extending up to Lanseria airport and from OR Tambo airport all the way to Boksburg.

The MEC says the multi-billion rand project will be completed in five phases over a 25 year period.
