Three Charlotte Maxeke employees shared their eyewitness account of the scene at the hospital following a structural collapse earlier this afternoon.
Charlotte Maxeke doctor Dean told presenter Redi Tlhabi that the collapse happened on the fifth floor (and ground floor/entrance) of the hospital known as Hospital Street.
I was 100 metres away when I heard a noise and screaming. There was a lot of dust, rubble and concrete.— Dean, caller
The doctor suspects that there could have been patients underneath the roof when the structure collapsed.
I don't know if the builders came down with it and I think there where people underneath.— Dean, caller
According to Dean, people were more pre-occupied with taking photos than they were with helping on the scene.
He and other medical staffers believe that the collapse may have been caused by construction work happening on the 6th floor above the entrance.
It's reported that builders where waterproofing the roof before it caved in.
Earlier, hospital employees Lolo and Amanda called presenter Azania Mosaka moments after the incident occurred.
I'm one of the workers here at Charlotte Maxeke hospital. The roof of the main entrance has collapsed and there are people trapped underneath, including workers and patients.— Lolo, caller
The situation is so scary. I'm worried about the people who are trapped under that debris. I'm worried that there are chairs for out-patients to sit where the roof collapsed.— Lolo, caller
It's not looking good. It happened on hospital street. This is the section where people come in and comes out. We don't know how many people are under the concrete or if the are alive or not.— Amanda, caller
Everything was fine and then all of a sudden there was a huge sound. When I looked back, It was dark. I was just entering my department after lunch at 2pm.— Amanda, caller
We are just trying to keep our patients calm at this time of the situation.— Amanda, caller
