Gordhan: Education is not the only government budget demand

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas have made National Treasury’s submission to the Commission of Inquiry into Higher Education and Training.

The commission is investigating the feasibility of free education.

EWN reporter following the story, Barry Bateman, explains that Gordhan emphasised education is not the only demand that Treasury faces when it comes to funding.

Gordhan highlighted the importance of looking at all challenges facing the country.

He said we have got to find that balance. He spoke at length about the limitations of a limited growth economy, and what kind of constraints this put on budget.

Barry Bateman, EWN reporter

Gordhan said government has set itself an expenditure ceiling, and choices have to be made on how the sufficient money available is spent.
