UK dad who created prosthetic arm for son plans to reach more children

The story of a UK dad, Ben Ryan has gone viral after he took it upon himself to create a prosthetic arm for his son.

Sol Ryan was born in 2015 with a blood clot in his left arm, resulting in a below-elbow amputation.

He would then be placed on a waiting list for a prosthetic, which would take up to a year.

After quitting his job Ben resolved to teaching himself the basics of product design and development using Fusion 360 software.

Within two months of starting his prosthetic project, he had developed a prototype and using a 3D printer, Ben had a fully-manufactured limb ready for Sol to use.

I have no formal training, I have worked on lots of different projects just as a hobbyist but nothing as big as this.

Ben Ryan, Founder of Ambionics

It required much learning. I had to teach myself an awful lot of things to produce this for Sol but a father’s love is all it takes really if you want to do something enough

Ben Ryan, Founder of Ambionics

Ben has set up a crowdfunding page to raise £150,000 to develop the technology further through his company Ambionics.

Its different technology to what is out there already. I just really need to finish the development of the prototype and once that is done I can start getting his arm to hundreds and thousands of other children around the world
