National Council Against Smoking executive director, Dr Yussuf Saloojee, says it is not true that the introduction of a bill to introduce plain cigarette packaging will increase illicit trading of tobacco.

Saloojee says South Africa's bill, which is expected to be available for public comment soon, is an essential measure to decrease consumption of tobacco.

British American Tobacco (BAT) says introducing plain packaging won't decrease public consumption of cigarettes, but instead will allow for illegal cigarette products to enter the market.
