Joburg Market officials face arrest over 'disturbing' fraud claims

The City of Johannesburg has opened a case of fraud, theft and corruption against three Joburg Market officials.

It's alleged that the officials defrauded the City to the amount of at least R7.5 million by inflating the number of goods received in the market’s procurement processes.

Three officials at the market, along with three suppliers, allegedly defrauded the City by misrepresenting the amounts of various goods received via the market’s procurement processes.

Tony Taverna-Turisan, spokesperson for Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba

The City's Mayoral Spokesperson Tony Taverna-Turisan says that in one of the three cases, the officials claimed for services rendered that cost the City R1.8 million.

In another instance, the Market's overpaid a supplier by R5 million, with some officials having direct interests in the supplier company.

The Joburg Market officials have been suspended and the City is working closely with the Hawks in the investigation to secure arrests, Taverna-Turisan advises.

It's really disturbing to see how deep-rooted it is. But we've acted very quickly and hope there will be arrests very soon.

Tony Taverna-Turisan, spokesperson for Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba

Taverna-Turisan says that one of the suspended officials is a senior manager within Joburg Market.

It appears that the the alleged corruption happened over the course of two years.
