National crime prevention strategies fail when they are too broad says expert

Latest crime stats released by Saps shows how crime has tracked over a 9 month period from April to December 2016 with over 960 000 serious cases reported.

What does this mean for a crime prevention strategy.

The Justice‚ Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster briefing in Pretoria on Sunday announced a review of this strategy.

Gareth Newham, Head of Crime & Justice Programm at the Institute for Security Studies helps us understanding how the National Crime Prevention Programme is formulated.

One of the big problems is when they try and develop a national crime strategy, they tend to over-prioritise too many things and becomes too complicated.

It is difficult to create one national plan as priorities are different.

Of course crime affects people at a local level, and different parts of the country have different crime challenges and threats.

He says it is far better to localise the crime strategies.
