Why moving homes can be a painful experience (and how to prepare yourself)

Relocating can be a distressing experience.

Behavioural psychologist Dr Helgo Schomer, explains that transitional trauma is the anxiety linked with moving out of a home or to a new home in a different community or environment.

This could be because of old age, scaling down or a job opportunity in a new place.

It could be that they had a big house and are going to independent assisted living, or just moving.

The longer someone has lived in a house, the more memories are collected and the harder it is to move on, Dr Schomer says.

He explains that moving is traumatic, particularly when people have collected decades of memories and material possessions.

Memories, stuff and experiences. Birth and death have happened in this house and you've stayed there.

Dr Schomer advises that it is important to open up about your anxiety to loved one's and to pro-actively plan your move well in advance.

Don't go it alone. Involve people.
