LISTEN: Eyewitness recounts what happened during OR Tambo Airport heist

The South African Airways (SAA) has confirmed that a container which was meant to be on one of its flights was stolen during a heist at OR Tambo International Airport.

Hawks and other law enforcement agencies are investigating how a container believed to hold millions of rand was intercepted by a group of men who were reportedly using a police van.

There are questions around how the suspects passed through airport security.

Acting national police commissioner, Kgomotso Phahlane, has said travellers should not be concerned about their safety.

A 702 caller working at OR Tambo airport, Thabo (not his real name), says he was at the airport when the robbery happened.

He says it occurred during the time when police were changing shifts and he alleges that airport employees are involved.
