Passion can be an entrepreneur's downfall, warns business coach

Business guru Dawn Klatzko says it is important for entrepreneurs to focus their passions, but also avoid pursuing their career objectives blindly.

Klatzko is an executive and business coach, motivational speaker, entrepreneur and author of The Art of the Suit.

According to Klatzko, most entrepreneurs and business leaders list ‘absolute passion’ amongst the top three drivers for believing their business will succeed.

She believes that this fundamental tenet of business success needs to be challenged and that entrepreneurs need to ask whether passion is always a driver of business success.

She says that the term passion is often used loosely in business jargon, without interrogating what it truly means.

Klatzko advises that passion is closely linked to sacrifice in its etymology.

According to Klatzko, it is important for passionate entrepreneurs to find balance in their business journey.

Klatzko spoke about the perks and the pitfalls of being passionate in business.

She explains that a passionate entrepreneur is able to:

  • overcome obstacles
  • become obsessively driven
  • become resilient
  • overcome negative criticism

If you'r not passionate or if you can't draw on a passionate resource, you're less likely to be a survivor or successful.

Dawn Klatzko, business coach and motivational speaker

At the same time, a passionate entrepreneurs can cripple themselves by:

  • not seeing potential pitfalls
  • refusing to listen to criticism
  • hanging on to a failed business plan

There is a role for passion, but only at the right time should you apply it.
