Questions raised why nobody noticed OR Tambo airport heist

Authorities say they now know how many people were part of the gang that intercepted a consignment carrying high-value items due to be transported on one of the South African Airways (SAA) planes.

The Hawks and other law enforcement agencies have launched a high-level investigation into the robbery that took place at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday night.

SAA has also launched an independent investigation.

EWN reporter, Mia Lindeque, says officials have not revealed what was in the container or who it belonged to.

Before the criminals managed to get the consignment, it was under the airside of the airport. This is the area you need a credited access card to access, that side of the airport.

Research fellow at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Criminology, Dr Andrew Faull, says it raises questions that the consignment was able to be removed without anyone noticing.

It's a kind of thing that would require somebody on the inside or somebody with official access to allow the gang to get in there.
