Dial down communications minister's role in the SABC - analyst

A recommendation by the Ad hoc Committee into the SABC, to reconsider Communications Minister Faith Muthambi’s position has been escalated by opposition parties who have called for the minister’s axing.

The report by the ad hoc committee was formally adopted in Parliament on Tuesday.

Now an interim board is expected to be appointed as soon as possible to implement the recommendations of the inquiry into the public broadcaster.

Kate Skinner is an independent broadcast researcher who has been following the inquiry.

Skinner says the report has made clear a need for better legislation, ensuring that the minister has less of an influence on public broadcaster’s dealings.

What you needing to do is to make sure at a level of legislation we make sure that the minister plays less of a role.

Kate Skinner, independent broadcast researcher

That’s where I think the ad hoc committee report is interesting…It says what Faith Muthambi was doing was trying to use the Company’s Act as much as possible because it gave her more powers as a shareholder.
