A win in the country’s first climate change lawsuit

Earthlife Africa (ELA), an environmental justice organisation, has won a ruling from the North Gauteng High Court after it filed a case against Environmental Affairs’ Minister Edna Molewa’s approval for the building of a new coal-fired power station.

This approval had been granted by the department without comprehensive assessment of the impact on the environment.

The minister now needs to consider the climate change impact.
